Summer Skin Savers

Dee Wallace

Bare-faced Dee

Summer in Phoenix is dry and hot. From April to September, my t-zone is an oil slick, but the rest of my face and skin can be extremely dry. It’s a chore to keep my sensitive, combination skin balanced, especially when the heat is on.

On a day-to-day basis I do nothing more than wash with Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps, tone with witch hazel, and moisturize with extra virgin coconut oil (or another oil).

Lately, I’ve been following a simple weekly regime to give my face a boost. Check it out below…

STEP ONE – CLEAN
Bentonite Clay Mask (Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay + Bragg’s Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar)
Mix equal parts clay and ACV in a non-metal bowl; apply 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch layer of mask to the face; allow to dry (five to 10 minutes for sensitive skin, 15 to 20 minutes for normal skin); and wash off with warm water. It is normal to experience pulsating and tightness as the mask dries, and some redness will be present for a short time after the mask is removed.

Bentonite clay is derived from volcanic ash and can be used to prevent blemishes, clean out pores, improve acne and breakouts, detoxify the skin, and more.

STEP TWO – TONE
Carol’s Daughter Açai Clarifying Exfoliating Toner
Skin toners are used to remove extra residue or buildup that may be present after washing. They are not a mandatory skin care product but can be beneficial for people with oily skin. This particular product should be gently applied all over the face and then washed off. I like the smell of it and find that it does a good job of oil management.

“Super-antioxidant Açai revitalizes and reveals younger-looking skin. Meadowsweet is a natural exfoliator that works well with Verbena, which reduces oils that may cause future breakouts. You’ll have fresh and soft skin that doesn’t feel tight. Plus, no parabens, no petroleum, no mineral oil, no artificial colors.” — Carol’s Daughter

STEP THREE – MOISTURIZE
BetterBody Foods Organic Cold Pressed Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
It sounds backwards to add oil to an already oily face, but I swear by coconut oil. I apply just a few drops of it during the day and a little more at night. This keeps skin smooth and moisturized, and helps even out my skin tone.

Keep in mind that these products (and this regime) work for me (combo – oily t-zone, sensitive skin), but may not be ideal for everyone. Find out what works for you and stick to it!
